Officials Investigate death at Nellis base

Nellis Air Force Base officials said an investigation continued Monday into the death of Tech Sgt. Charles W. Simons, 37, who died Friday after being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic on the base two days earlier.

Simons, 37, a member of the 99th Security Forces Squadron, was struck while controlling traffic at Duffer and Tyndall streets on the base about 5 p.m. Wednesday, said Capt. Veronica Kemeny, a Nellis spokeswoman.

A bomb threat near the main gate that day had caused traffic congestion, Kemeny said.

She said members of the base’s security forces conducted a preliminary investigation of the accident, but the case has been turned over to local authorities. Simons, of Huntington, Ind., died Friday at University Medical Center. He had served in the Air Force for 18 yrs. Services are at 10 a.m. at Christian Central Church.
