On April 30, 1948, at approximately 23:20 hours, Deputy Gallagher, the night deputy on duty received a call that there was a prowler seen on Howard Street in Virginia City. Deputy Gallagher left the office located in the Court House and responded on foot to the scene about three blocks away. Deputy Gallagher suffered a heart attack as he arrived at the reporting person’s home and died where he collapsed at approximately 23:50 hours.
